What is the Responsible Jewellery Council?

The Responsible Jewellery Council is an international non-profit organization of over 1,000 jewelry and watch companies. The RJC initially coveredgold, diamonds and platinum, but colored gemstones and silver joined the organization in 2019. This certification provides consumers with guarantees regarding extraction and traceability conditions.

CERTIFICATION

The RJC 's mission is to certify the best practices of companies involved in thegold and diamond supply chain. Certification takes into account all actions from mine to distribution. It is a means of implementing responsible and ethical business practices.

To obtain certification, a self-assessment and an SGS audit are carried out. The audit, which grants certification to the company, covers a range of issues including business ethics, human rights and working conditions, health and respect for theenvironment. The agency assesses a Jewelry House's compliance with the code of good practice established by the RJC. If the application is subsequently validated, the Responsible Jewellery Council will grant certification to the company.

The code of good practice

The RJC's Code of Good Practice is designed to provide a roadmap for jewelry companies. This set of practices evolves over time, adapting to demand and needs. The code is re-evaluated and updated every 3 years. In recent years, best practices have been aligned with the United Nations' principles concerning the origin of diamonds, gold and silver.

Companies joining the initiative must obtain certification within 2 years of joining, and must commit to promoting ethical and environmental practices. Thecompany thus undertakes to be a player that respects the ethical and social code, human rights and the environment.

A must-have certification

RJC certification is a must in today's jewelry world. It is a guarantee of consumer confidence, but also of respect for the environment and human rights.

The aim of certification is to provide a framework for good practice and to highlight all stages of the supply chain. Transparency and good practice are a prerequisite for membership of the Responsible Jewellery Council.
