18K gold, a symbol of purity and majesty, is a noble metal that has reigned since the dawn of time. Indeed, the oldest gold object found to date dates back to at least 5,000 BC. The entire history of gold is accurate thanks to the very nature of this metal: it is indestructible. Gold in its pure form remains intact whether buried or immersed, even for 2,000 years.

Gold has been a human favorite since its discovery. Quickly associated with power, beauty and the cultural elite, gold's main roles were in pageantry and religious worship. In the Chinese empire, for example, gold symbolized the Sun, perfection and light. The Greeks also used gold to symbolize warmth and fertility. Ancient Egypt, for its part, used gold to magnify its pharaohs, with amulets, scepters and masks, and to decorate its temples.

The first gold coin dates back to the 8th century BC. But the real first production of gold coins took place on Turkish territory under the reign of Croesus around 550 BC. Gold subsequently spread to ancient Greece, Persia and the West. Over time, the history of gold has been punctuated by various events, such as the famous American gold rush. Today, gold has not been used as a currency for more than 40 years, but it still retains strong meanings. At once a symbol of wealth, sporting performance, beauty and brilliance, gold continues to make us shine.

Yellow gold has been worked and transformed over time, and there are two other variations of gold color:rose gold and white gold, also known as white gold. These three gold colors are commonly used in jewelry.

Like gold, platinum is a noble metal, often used for engagement rings and wedding bands.

This metal was discovered much more recently than pure gold. It was in 1735 that platinum was discovered in South America by Antonio de Ulloa, a Spanish explorer, and brought back to Europe. Prior to this discovery, platinum nuggets found by Colombian gold miners were often discarded as "unripe" gold. It was only after study, melting and transformation that this most precious of metals was used and recognized for its astonishing capacities.

In jewelry, platinum is popular because it does not tarnish over time and is hypoallergenic, making it ideal for sensitive skin.

This is one of the reasons why it is so popular with jewellers for the creation of engagement rings and wedding bands.
