AN ETERNAL STONE

Diamond, from the Greek "Adamas", meaning "unbreakable", "pure" and suggesting éternité and love, was first discovered following a volcanic eruption in India in 1000 BC. As its etymology suggests, diamond is the most solid stone in the world. It cannot be scratched, except in the presence of another diamond.

Diamonds are 100% carbon. Under the heat and pressure below the earth's surface, carbon atoms bond together in this rare and beautiful crystalline form. Coming from deep within the earth, the primary sources of natural diamonds are volcanic vents. Diamonds are found all over the world in the form of diamondiferous rock, the most famous of which is called kimberlite, named after the town of Kimberley in South Africa.

The diamond is a symbol in many cultures. In India, the other name for diamonds is "fruit of the stars", and they are said to come from sacred springs. In Greco-Roman mythology, the diamond is a symbol of eternal love, but is also seen as an amulet of protection. Indeed, diamonds are so strong that they are considered a protector of all who wear them. Did you know that it was for this reason that Napoleon always carried a diamond with him for protection?

THE 4 C'S TO DISTINGUISH A DIAMOND

The 4Cs are the characteristics of a diamond indicated by analysis laboratories and grouped together in a certificate. The G.I.A. (Gemological Institute of America) and the H.R.D. (Hoge Raad voor Diamant) are two of these internationally renowned laboratories that distinguish between different diamond types and diamond quality.

Carat

The carat corresponds to the weight of a stone. For reference, 1 carat weighs 0.20 grams. We also speak of points, as one carat is divisible into 100 points. Thus, a 0.25-carat diamond will have a weight equal to 25 points, or 1/4 carat. The value of a diamond varies according to the weight of the stone. The more carats a diamond has, the higher its price. For a diamond with twice as many points as another, its price can be 5 or 6 times higher!

Cut (Size)

The cut of a diamond is essential for its clarity. Indeed, even if a diamond is extremely pure and colorless, if it is badly cut, it will lose all its intense luminosity. The most important task for jewelry craftsmen is therefore to cut the diamond perfectly to give it brilliance and brilliance.

Clarity

A diamond's purity is calculated according to the number of inclusions visible inside. It is, of course, impossible to estimate the number of inclusions with the naked eye. IF" purity means a total absence of inclusions in the diamond, visible with a x10 magnifying glass. The more inclusions are visible, the more the purity deteriorates. We then go from IF purity to VVS (Very Very Small inclusion(s)), VS (Very Small), SI (Small), etc., until these inclusions become visible to the naked eye.

Color

A diamond's purity is characterized by its white color. It is therefore logical that the less color a diamond has, the purer and more noble it is. Artisan jewelers qualify a diamond's nobility and purity according to its color.

3 ANECDOTES ABOUT DIAMONDS

The name of the largest diamond in the world is the Cullinan, named after the owner of the deposit where the diamond was discovered in 1905 in South Africa. It weighed 3106 carats or 0.6 kg. This huge diamond was offered to King VII of England, on the occasion of his birthday, by the owner of the mine. The Cullinan eventually gave birth to nine large stones and 96 small pear-shaped diamonds and a remnant of 9K (photos opposite). Three of the 96 small diamonds are displayed in the Tower of London as crown jewels.

Another amazing fact about diamonds: Did you know that scientists have discovered a planet of diamonds? 55 Cancri e, a mysterious name for a planet that is just as mysterious. Composed essentially of carbon, the main material in diamonds, more than a third of its surface is made of pure diamond! Like us, this planet orbits a star and is close to the Milky Way.

Even more amazing about diamonds, scientists have discovered a breathtaking star, a huge diamond. A star made of a diamond weighing ten billion trillion carats (that's a lot of zeros). It's been dubbed Star Lucy in reference to the Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".
