CORNELIAN

Cornelian belongs to the chalcedony family, which in turn belongs to the quartz family. Cornelian gets its colour from the iron in the stone, called hematite. Cornelian has different shades of red: a bright red or an orange red for example. These shades depend on the amount of iron in the stone, similar to the different shades of rose gold which depend on the amount of copper in the metal.
