The new Fabergé egg

Fabergé eggs are known the world over, and are the talk of the town. Famous for their beauty, craftsmanship and priceless value, Pierre-Karl Fabergé's lineage includes over 50 pieces, to which a new addition has now been added. For the 10th anniversary of the Game of Thrones series, the Fabergé jeweler has created a unique egg in reference to the cult character Daenerys Targaryen. This sumptuous piece was unveiled over Easter.

WHO IS PIERRE-KARL FABERGÉ?

Pierre-Karl Fabergé was a 19th-century Russian jeweler of German-Danish origin. The son of a jeweler, he continued the family love affair by creating refined decorative objects: flowers, jewelry, figurines, frames, clocks, boxes and more. But he set himself apart with his Fabergé eggs. Jewelry in the shape of an Easter egg, made from precious metals and stones.

In 1885, Tsar Alexander III presented his wife with the first Fabergé Easter egg. At first glance, this white enamel egg was nothing special, apart from the fact that it was created from precious metals and stones. But another of the peculiarities of these eggs is that they hold real treasures within their breasts. This first creation was a multicolored gold hen, with a crown inside, and a small ruby egg in the crown. This first piece of jewelry was so appreciated by the Tsar that he ordered one every year for his wife. On the death of Alexander III, his son Nicholas II continued the tradition, offering 2 eggs a year: one for his wife, the other for his mother.

A total of 52 imperial eggs have been produced since the first one was created. However, 7 of these 52 eggs are still missing. As rare as they are precious, Fabergé eggs remain benchmarks in the history of the jewelry arts.

WHAT'S FABERGÉ'S NEW CREATION?

The House of Fabergé wanted to innovate with a totally new egg inspired by dragons and the fantasy world of the Game of Thrones series.

To continue the tradition of imperial Easter eggs, Fabergé is renewing and modernizing itself by joining forces with the legendary series.

Co-imagined by Fabergé designer Liisa Tallgren and series costume designer Michele Clapton, the unique piece is a reference to the dragon eggs of Game of Thrones heroine Daenerys Targaryen.

The surface of this Fabergé egg evokes the texture and scales of the animal's skin, a reference to the dragons that feature so prominently in the series. We observe a gradation of gray, black, red, violet and blue, sprinkled with diamonds and rainbow moonstones.

True to Fabergé tradition, the jewel opens to reveal a sparkling crystal crown with a pear-cut ruby from the Montepuez de Gemfields ruby mine in Mozambique at its center. This jewel is surmounted by a red dragon set with precious stones, recalling the inspiration for this egg.

"From the outset, the evolution of this object egg has been truly poetic. The design references Daenerys Targaryen's incredible journey and the importance of color in her costumes, her passion for her dragons and the way she conveyed messages via her jewelry throughout her journey in the series. References to the textures of dragons and their iconic eggs were used to inform the surfaces of this object egg."
