How to choose your wedding ring?

Since the beginning of time, men and women have exchanged rings as a sign of deep affection and true love. As far back as Ancient Egypt, for example, rings made of reeds or papyrus were exchanged between newlyweds. The ring represented and still represents the circle, figure of eternity and infinity.

Today, the exchange of wedding rings at a wedding ceremony is a symbolic and life-changing moment. They are a symbol of eternal union, undying love and unfailing loyalty. The wedding ring is the ring that accompanies us throughout our lives, the most sentimental of all.

On which finger is the wedding ring worn?

Traditionally, the wedding ring is worn on the ring finger of the left hand in France, as it was believed that a vein connected this finger directly to the heart. It was even called the Vena Amoris.

In other European countries, such as Germany, Poland and Greece, the wedding ring is worn on the right hand, always on the ring finger. In Chinese culture, each finger is associated with a family member, the ring finger with the life partner.

engagement ring and wedding band

Traditionally, the engagement ring and wedding band are worn on the same finger. The wedding ring is put on first, to be closer to the heart, then comes the engagement ring. More and more women decide to wear their wedding ring on the left ring finger and their engagement ring on the right hand.

To choose your wedding ring, you first need to decide which finger you'd like to wear it on. Do you want to match your two rings and wear them side by side, or would you prefer them to be worn separately on different fingers? If you choose to wear the wedding band and engagement ring on the same finger, we recommend harmonizing the two rings for an elegant, balanced result.

materials and colors of gold

The 18K gold is the almost mandatory material for a wedding ring. Metal very used in jewelry and high jewelry, it is appreciated for its solidity, its durability and its preciousness.

White gold is the choice of the majority of French people for their wedding rings. We recommend palladium-plated white gold, a mixture of white gold and platinum, if you choose a gray wedding band. The platinum in the alloy will prevent the 18-carat white gold from yellowing slightly over time.

18-carat yellow gold is the second most popular color for wedding rings, followed byrose gold . rose gold , the most romantic gold color, brings a touch of softness and femininity, while yellow gold is luminous and timeless.

shapes and gemstones

Alliances can take many forms.

  • Wedding ring: the round, traditional wedding ring with a timeless appeal.

  • the demi-jonc: a ring with a rounded exterior and a flat interior, comfortable to wear while retaining the traditional look of a ring.

  • the ribbon: a ring with smooth, flat lines, inside and out.

Jewelry houses also play with shapes, offering more creative and less usual forms for the more ambitious.

When it comes to gemstones, diamonds, the symbol oféternité and unfailing strength, are logically the most sought-after gemstone for wedding rings. However, most of the time, no stones are set on the ring, which reinforces the jewel's durability, as stones can be damaged. Colored gemstones are rarer on wedding rings.

What engraving?

Engraving is often affixed to the inside of the ring to bring out the sentimental dimension we look for in a wedding band. For example, you can choose to personalize the ring with your first name, your wedding date, or a symbolic message of your own.

our tips

We advise you to try on several wedding rings before making your choice, and to do so with your engagement ring if you wish to wear them on the same finger.

When it comes to ring sizing, we recommend that you try the wedding band on the finger of the hand on which you will be wearing the ring, to avoid distorting the metric. Find all our advice on choosing the right ring size in our size guide.
